Hi Paul

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you but I have been away. The post has not yet been written, other priorities got in the way. Apologies. Certainly happy to discuss these with you over email if you like

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the concise, well-written post. You did a great job.

I looked for the follow-up "better solutions to these problems beyond a CMS" that you hinted at, but have not found it.

Where is it?

@Ewan (probably didn't need to say that!)
Thanks for the comments. I have experienced the issue with trained staff leaving many times leaving behind them staff who have been given a 5 minute hand over. One way to handle it is to provide user manuals or even better now would be video tutorials, but unfortuneatly I rarely have the pleasure of working with a budget that covers their production. In this world everyone (me included) wants the best value at the lowest price and rarely have the foresight and experience to understand why sometimes it is a false economy to go for the cheaper option. (I think half the problem is the number of rip off merchants out there spoiling it for everyone else, but thats between you and me, oops, no its not!)

Interesting article Dave, and I totally agree. I absolutely hate handing over a smashing looking site into a clients hands when I know (and then is proved later) that they are going to completely ruin it. Ok, they are happy with it which is the main thing, but it is frustrating and discourages me from using it in my portfolio.

We often offer maintenance contracts which if kept under control can be great. If you do train client staff, there is the chance that member could leave, and as such the client is left with no-one who has the knowledge to update the site. Maintenance contracts are fine I guess if you have the resources, but I agree about them becoming a bit of a slog when you end up spending days making tedious changes.
