When I build websites, I must always decide whether or not to implement a Content Management System (CMS). There are advantages and disadvantage, both for you the client and for me your website designer or web developer, so I want to adopt the role of educator if I may and identify some of these issues. A CMS (specifically a web CMS), for those who don’t know, is a system to simplify the publication of web content to web sites, in particular allowing content creators to submit content without requiring technical knowledge of HTML or the uploading of files.

I want my code widgets rendered in HTML5 please
Code snippets that are rendered by online services to be copied and pasted onto your webpage or inserted as a widget into your blog. Isn’t it about time we saw a move towards giving people choice, with a simple checkbox or why not a nice UI slider, of what ‘flavour’ of (x)HTML they would like their HTML code rendered.
The client, the IT company and the ethical web professional
When it comes to web solutions, websites, web applications or any combination of these, it has become increasingly clear to me over the years that we are dealing with 3 very different sets of expectations, understanding and objectives. Be assured, not everyone will be singing from the same song sheet. If you are the web professional in this scenario then it will be useful to be aware of this so you can manage the situation. If you are either of the other two parties in this trio it may be useful to educate yourself a little . In a follow up post I hope to suggest a few strategies for dealing with this revelation, but for now lets just explain a little about each stakeholder
The 3 most important skills for a trainee web developer/web designer
Having spent the last 8 months working with a trainee and taking it upon myself to give them a firm grounding in all aspects of web development, I decided to write this article which is primarily aimed at young school leavers or under graduates hoping to embark on a career in the web industry . Of course those of you reading who are yourselves involved in the industry and have a few years experience behind you may like to add your own ideas on what you feel are the 3 most important skills to acquire.
